So what’s our story?
The origins of CryomatiKs Inc. starts with LNG, which stands for Liquefied Natural Gas. A few decades ago LNG completely altered the history of energy markets with two primary changes. The first change, is natural gas can be procured with long term contracts so the price is known a decade or more in advance. The second change, is that chilling natural gas into LNG allows large quantities of energy to be delivered as needed. The transportation industry would love to have that same level of stability in energy prices. Imagine a delivery company with 1000s of vehicles knowing exactly what their fuel cost would be for the next 10-20 years. Well, that is exactly what our technology is able to do and best of all we no longer require any natural gas so our solutions are 100% zero emission. Instead of consuming natural gas, the same air the we all breathe every single day is our “fuel.” So how exactly did this achievement come to be? Like most things in life, there were dozens of various happenings that contributed to this outcome. Let’s review some of those events.
Chilling the air we breathe into a liquid has been an industrial process for over 120 years and already occurs at 1000s of facilities around the globe every single day. This Liquid Air is often separated into Oxygen and Nitrogen. The Oxygen is used for medical use, water treatment, and aerospace. The Nitrogen is commonly used to create fertilizers to help grow food plus Nitrogen helps to preserve food as well. Nitrogen is also used daily by the semiconductor industry, the oil & gas industry, along with many other large industries.
Over 25 years ago there were 3 different trends that were all converging at the same time: 1) natural gas suppliers were looking to offer more long term purchase contracts, 2) nuclear power plants were looking for new electrical loads during off-peak hours, 3) updated emission standards were entering the transportation industry.
This convergence was an opportunity for LNG to gain significant adoption within the transportation industry by offering fixed pricing to fleet operators while also helping those same operators meet increasing emissions requirements. Converting internal combustion engines to operate on LNG in place of diesel is a straightforward process. However, in order for LNG to gain adoption within transportation, refueling options that are as convenient as refueling with diesel or gasoline fuel needed to be created. Our solution was to use the excess electricity from nuclear power plants during off peak hours to chill the air we breathe into Liquid Air. The Oxygen is sold at a premium and the Liquid Nitrogen is sold to various industries mentioned above while also providing the ability to chill natural gas into LNG as needed to refuel converted fleet vehicles. This approach eliminated the expensive LNG equipment and allowed fleet operators to use their existing natural gas lines as their fuel source. In this arrangement, the Liquid Nitrogen is delivered and stored onsite which creates another exciting opportunity: powering electric vehicles that have local daily routes with our Liquid Nitrogen Range Extender so that the large battery pack was no longer required. LNG serves as the fuel for vehicles with longer routes while Liquid Nitrogen serves as the “fuel” for electric vehicles with short routes.
Although there are a few commercial fleets that use LNG for their vehicles, that solution has struggled to gain adoption beyond a few niche markets. However, the demand from fleet operators for fixed long term energy prices that are also zero emission continues to grow day after day. This is why over 15 years ago we decided to build from the proven technical fundamentals of the LNG industry but move away from natural gas entirely and instead focus on Liquid Air/Nitrogen. New trends are now converging and we are able to use our patented expansion technology combined with Liquid Air to meet the needs of these recent trends. Here’s a brief recap of these current trends: 1) just as nuclear power plants were previously searching for additional electrical loads during off peak hours, low cost power from wind/solar is now searching for additional electrical loads, 2) fleet operators are desperately searching for technologies that offer fixed energy cost while meeting future emission standards, 3) and cities are starting to ban the use of internal combustion engines. Well, chilling the air we breathe into Liquid Air provides a new electrical load for wind/solar farms while our proprietary zero emission technology allows fleet operators to have fixed energy cost for decades while also meeting current and future emissions standards. Our technology can also offer the same 5 minute quick refueling offered by diesel/gasoline. In other words, our technology is exactly what fleet operators are desperately searching for.
Our family of zero emission technology has grown well beyond offering EV solutions for delivery vehicles to include zero emission solutions for: city buses, refrigerated trucks/trailers, taxis, RVs, city vehicles, and even “tuk tuks”. Our patented technology also enables mobile on-demand EV quick charging, grid independent “Pop-Up” EV quick charging stations, and Just-In-Time Liquid Air/Nitrogen “refueling.”
Beyond transportation, our solutions offer zero emission emergency power and portable generators that also provide high grade air conditioning / refrigeration. Our technology combined with Liquid Air can significantly lower the operating cost of large scale data centers and food distribution centers all while being 100% zero emissions.
Although there is already an existing global supply chain for Liquid Nitrogen/Air, in order to help drive the mass adoption of our technology we have licensed revolutionary wind technology that enables the production of extremely large quantities of low cost Liquid Air/Nitrogen which can then be delivered around the globe. These same wind systems can enable the production of extremely low cost Green Hydrogen. The Nitrogen from the Liquid Air is combined with the Green Hydrogen to provide low cost Green Ammonia that can be delivered to 100s of existing locations.
